New Rates of Pay

New Rates of Pay

New rates of the National Living Wage (NLW) and the National Minimum Wage (NMW) will come into effect from April 2018. The National Hairdresser's Federation (NHF) have described these as 'disappointing'.

They further described what you need to know about these increases: "Sharp increases will cause real pain for many salon owners and we were dismayed to see the government push ahead with them, particularly during a period of rising prices and uncertain consumer confidence. However, the National Living Wage rose by less than we had feared, this is some consolation and a positive sign that the government was prepared to listen to our warning about this at least."

NATIONAL LIVING WAGE (NLW) RATES FOR OVER 25s
NLW 2018 - £7.83
NLW 2017 - £7.50

NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE (NMW) FOR 21 - 24 YEAR OLDS
NMW 2018 - £7.38
NMW 2017 - £7.05

NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE (NMW) FOR 18 - 20 YEAR OLDS
NMW 2018 - £5.90
NMW 2017 - £5.60

NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE (NMW) FOR 16 - 17 YEAR OLDS
NMW 2018 - £4.20
NMW 2017 - £4.05

APPRENTICE RATES (up to the age of 19 years old. After this they should get the NMW appropriate for their age from the 2nd year of their apprenticeship)
2018 - £3.70
2017 - £3.50

Make sure you adhere to these rules. The government are not adverse to naming and shaming companies who do not pay these new rates from April this year. 10% of companies in a recent list were hair or beauty salons. Get ready and plan in your increases now.
